Framework For Delivery

What Does it Do?

The UKGTN aims to provide high quality genetics laboratory services across the whole of the UK. It's operated within a Framework for Delivery that includes quality management, commissioning, laboratory processes and services, patient needs, communications and the future direction.

A fundamental principle for the UKGTN is that of geographical equity: Patients and their families who require genetics advice, diagnosis and management should be able to access a range of expert advice and appropriate tests via local genetics centres. To achieve this, the work of UKGTN covers a range of activities which are summarised below:

  • Assessing applications from laboratories to become members. All member laboratories must fulfil defined criteria including quality criteria, confidentiality and data protection and professional and legal standards for informed consent.

  • UKGTN evaluates new tests for scientific validity and clinical utility that member laboratories wish to provide on a national basis and makes recommendations to NHS commissioners.

  • UKGTN influences national policies.

  • UKGTN provides an information source including the database of national testing services that member laboratories provide.

The framework for delivering the UK Genetic Testing Network (PDF, 57K) sets out the core role and functions of the network. It draws together all the strategic approaches that will drive the required work strands to realise a robust and sustainable genetics diagnostic testing network.
